Description

 

The Senior Release Train Engineer (Sr. RTE) will serve as an expert in Agile, Scrum, Essential SAFe and leading Agile delivery teams to deliver value consistently. The Sr. RTE is a proven servant leader and coach for an Agile Release Train (ART) within the Technology organization. They are expected to be experts in best practices and focus on ensuring that ART’s feature commitments are met. This includes working with the teams to determine if they will complete Features and mitigate issues preventing Features from completing. The Sr. RTE will facilitate horizontal and vertical communication across teams and identify any impediments that may hinder team progress while working on mitigation plans as needed. The Sr. RTE will be responsible for sensing, determining, and leading discussions when issues need to be analyzed or triaged. They collaborate closely with technology leaders to evolve and mature our Team Agile and Agile Scale practices with a focus on cross-ART / cross-team consistencies and best practices. They are also mentors for peers.

What is the day to day like?

 

Senior Release Train Engineer will Coach the lean-agile mindset and practices to members of the ART, including scrum masters, agile team members and business owners while Optimizing the flow of work through the ART. You will capture and review ART metrics to support relentless improvement. Help the program team prepare for PI Planning and ensure the vision, roadmap and program backlogs are ready. Support the creation, and relentless improvement, of a continuous delivery pipeline by promoting DevOps practices within the organization. Help teams with feature estimation and the aggregation of estimates for larger pieces of work such as Portfolio Epics, while Managing risks, dependencies and resolve impediments.

 

  • Manage and optimize the flow of value through the ART, by improving and assessing DevOps and Release on Demand competency
  • Act as a liaison between business owners, IT development, product management and outside vendors to ensure total alignment on requirements and specifications
  • Facilitate Agile @ Scale ceremonies and events, managing the processes, escalating impediments, managing risks, assisting the teams in delivering value using Essential SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) and providing input on resourcing to address critical bottlenecks
  • Lead Features and Portfolio Epics to be compliant with the exit criteria of related Kanban phases
  • Align Team PI Objectives into Program PI Objectives and publish them for visibility and transparency
  • Coach leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in Lean-Agile practices and mindsets
  • Work closely with an STE (solution train engineer) and the product launch team to coordinate release trains, assess the impact on other DevOps processes, and meet the Launch Process and Launch Definitions
  • Acquire an in-depth understanding of the large SPS eco system, and assess risk and understand varied customer/team needs
  • Brief customer/stakeholder on development progress throughout PI cycle and on the status of testing, deployment, and release readiness
  • Help drive the innovation cycle and the engagement and usage of 3rd party tools that support engineering teams within the ARTs
  • Stay abreast of industry and technology trends to continuously improve solution delivery practices and customer satisfaction
  • Assist with efforts to understand operational health, customer satisfaction, and total cost of operation and build awareness of opportunities and risks
  • Collaborate with team members to identify opportunities to advance our Team Agile and Agile & Scale practices Using Enterprise Insights to make data-driven improvements across the ART and Agile Practices

 

What experience is required?

 

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years of APM/Release Train Engineer or related experience; or a Master's degree with 3 years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3+ years of experience working on large scale, multiple Scrum team projects
  • Experience working in an Agile environment using Scrum, XP, Kanban, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), or other scaling model
  • Effectively manage priorities with ability to juggle multiple demands and reprioritize as necessary to align with changing objectives
  • Experience with briefing leadership and/or customers of key status of project progression, as well as communicating status to external stakeholders
  • Experience affecting change in organizations working towards high quality team agile and agile @ scale execution
  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary development teams
  • Demonstrated ability to stay abreast of industry practices and technologies
  • Ability to understand technical concepts and communicate them effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience working with virtual teams and comfortable driving cross functional teams to clarity, agreement, roadblock removal and execution while communicating impact, value, and progress, with little guidance
  • High-energy, patience, empathy, flexibility, openness to change, diplomacy, teaching/training/coaching, public speaking
  • A seasoned servant leader, strong communicator, strong coaching and mentoring skills

 

  • Bonus Experience and Skills
    • Certification in Scaled Agile Practices CSP and/or RTE
    • Certification in Team Agile practices (e.g. CSM, CPO, etc.)
    • Proficient with various Atlassian tools including, Jira, Jira Align, Confluence
