Position Summary:
The Lead Software Engineer is the go-to person for domain considerations, thus providing long-term solutions to technical problems and are subject matter experts. This person will collaborate with stakeholders inside and outside their team. The Lead Software Engineer will work with engineers and leaders of other teams to develop and share best practices. The Lead Software Engineer is responsible for delivering planned work, ensuring quality solutions built, and the smooth operation and runtime of those solutions. This role will balance their focus between individual work and team leadership, engaging the team as a peer mentor to drive high performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Solution Architecture & Engineering Leadership
Identify and articulate scalable engineering and Workday HCM solutions to business problems. Lead the architectural design of Workday solutions across related modules, translating business requirements into best-practice configurations, integrations, and workflows. Develop and maintain technical roadmaps, architectural design documents, and governance frameworks for Workday and associated HR systems.
- Technical Implementation & Delivery
Build, configure, and maintain complex business processes, calculated fields, condition rules, and integrations (EIB, Core Connectors, Workday Studio), along with secure data exchanges to third-party systems (payroll, benefits, LMS). Create and facilitate test and development strategies for releases and upgrades; oversee data migrations, tenant builds, and system conversions. Perform code and architectural reviews and decompose projects into manageable tasks with clear, iterative plans. Lead team members to deliver results and coordinate work across engineering teams
- Operational Excellence & Best Practices
Promote engineering and architectural best practices within and across teams. Monitor the operational health of applications, services, and domains, serving as the technical escalation point for complex Workday and system issues. Define and enforce engineering protocols, development standards, and governance models to ensure system reliability, security, and performance. Support business data ingress/egress needs, including bulk loads.
- Cross-Functional Partnership & Strategic Advisory
Serve as a strategic technical advisor to HR, Payroll, Finance, Security, and IT stakeholders on Workday capabilities, limitations, and release adoption. Provide thought leadership in Workday release management and drive alignment between technical solutions and business outcomes through proactive communication and orchestration across functions.
- Talent Development & Organizational Contribution
Mentor team members to drive skills growth and engagement; provide guidance on complex configuration scenarios and integration patterns. Participate in interviews and hiring decisions. Foster engineering culture through knowledge-sharing, coaching, and establishing practices that elevate delivery maturity across teams.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field — or equivalent education and work experience
- 6–8+ years of relevant experience implementing and supporting enterprise SaaS systems, including 3+ years in a senior technical or architect role
- Hands-on expertise with Workday HCM configuration (business processes, calculated fields, security, EIBs) and integrations (EIB, Core Connectors, Workday Studio, SOAP/REST web services, custom reporting)
- Experience operating across multiple layers of the technology stack with strong knowledge of PDLC/SDLC, cloud, and distributed architectures
- Demonstrated ability to design long-term, scalable technical solutions with clear rationale and decision transparency
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills; able to rationalize decisions across technical and business audiences
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with engineers and stakeholders of diverse skill levels and technical depth
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cloud providers, particularly AWS
- Workday Pro or Workday Partner certifications across HCM modules or integrations
- Familiarity with Agile practices, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps toolchains
- Experience with middleware platforms and enterprise identity/security systems
What We Offer:
At SPS Commerce, we are committed to ensuring that each employee's compensation reflects their unique experiences, performance, and skills in their role. The salary range for this role considers several factors, including education, relevant skills, work history, certifications, location, and more.
The annual salary range for this role is: $100,200 - $150,000. The actual salary offered will be determined based on the factors listed above and may fall anywhere within the range.
Additionally, you may also be eligible to participate in an annual incentive program. An incentive award, if granted, is based on individual and/or organizational performance.
